Works great as a meat marinade when mixed with a little olive oil. The essential ingredients are barley malt vinegar, spirit vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies, tamarind extract, onions, garlic and other spices. Lea & Perrins® Worcestershire Sauce is cholesterol free, fat free, preservative free, gluten free and has 80% less sodium than soy sauce. Worcestershire sauce is great in meatloaf, Louisiana style BBQ shrimp and a variety of dishes where extraordinary flavors are required. Works great as a meat marinade when mixed with a little olive oil. The origins of Worcestershire Sauce dates back to Greco-Roman history, when fermented fish sauce known as "garum" was popular. The Lea & Perrins brand began selling in 1837, and has acquired a global following and is the leader in the category. It is just by chance that the product came into existence, as the original batch was considered inedible, and left in a barrel in basement. Subsequently, a few years later, chemist John Wheeley Lea and William Henry Perrins revisited the idea and found that the original product had mellowed and was now a pleasant taste.
